NECA Boston Contractor on the Job Keeping Greater Boston Safe and Secure
LAN-TEL Communications, a NECA Boston member, is on the job providing cutting-edge security through telecom in Boston and eight surrounding towns via video surveillance, advanced analytics and much more. Just a few of the prominent (and logistically challenging) events LAN-TEL recently provided security services for are the Boston Marathon, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and the U.S. Open Golf Championship in Brookline, MA.
Read on for insights on the ever-evolving IT/telecom security industry - including how it is keeping our communities safe and how to get into the booming business.
A Cutting Edge Leader in New England Security Through Telecom and IT
LAN-TEL Communications, Inc., an IBEW Local 103 and 109 signatory contractor, was founded in 1992 and quickly became regarded as a premier firm for delivering advanced solutions in IT infrastructure and security systems throughout Greater Boston and New England.
John Grennon, Director of Security, manages LAN-TEL’s team of eighteen security technicians, on call 24/7, that support over one hundred municipalities in the Greater Boston area, maintaining the Coast Guard, Boston Police Department and more. Grennon, who served for years in the Sheriff's Department, says the entire team takes great pride in keeping our communities safer.
Through design build prefabrication, the team can provide vital security solutions “in less than an hour,” Grennon says, citing how they provide on-call security for threatened victims on behalf of District Attorneys. “We’re the only shop in Boston that does security to this extent.”
LAN-TEL, through innovative point-to-point wireless transmission solutions, has a camera network that can source power from “nearly anywhere” and transmit and capture video across the Commonwealth to aid law enforcement.
Providing Video Surveillance Technology and Ensuring Safety at The US Open
The U.S. Open, a major golf championship, hosted 33,000 spectators for the final game in Brookline - the event’s largest crowd yet. LAN-TEL, through its contract with the Greater Boston Department of Defense, was tasked with providing video surveillance technology to support the police and maintain safety.
This complex undertaking involved installing security cameras throughout the area - including 4K and night/thermal cameras, says Eric Johnson, who managed the project as LAN-TEL’s Electronic Security Project Manager. LAN-TEL then integrated telecom interoperability so the footage was available live for local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
LAN-TEL also provided authorities with vital intel on where to deploy security resources by utilizing analytics to survey traffic and crowd patterns. Further, their Mobile Accessible Command Unit - a rapidly deployed vehicle loaded with security tech - “allowed authorities to operate the cameras on-site in the MACU so they could dispatch units in real-time in case of an emergency,” says Grennon.
Uplifting the Community to Help the Community
The LAN-TEL team takes great pride in hiring locally and providing rewarding, high-growth career paths and training, through its partnerships with NECA Boston, IBEW 103, and Boston public technical high schools. LAN-TEL often visits local high schools to meet with students displaying aptitude and interest in electrical contracting to promote the JATC apprenticeship.
Dewars Vazquez, for instance, has been in a Local 103 Apprenticeship with LAN-TEL for over 3 years whilst getting a bachelor’s degree at Wentworth. He would recommend the industry “to anyone” and his proudest moments are “seeing solved crimes and missing people being found safe because of images captured on the cameras he worked on.”
Vazquez is already mentoring others and utilizing his real-world experience and training to fast-track a career path to project manager.
A Budding Industry and Partnership with Local 103 and NECA Boston
The telecom industry is constantly evolving–and even more so when it comes to security, which makes it “an exciting and rewarding career path with rapid growth opportunities,” says Grennon.
“You can’t be stagnant, you must constantly be learning,” says Eric Johnson. Employees are encouraged to be innovative and “make mistakes” (albeit, not on the field), Johnson added.
LAN-TEL is recruiting five apprentices from the JATC program with NECA Boston and IBEW 103. Grennon says LAN-TEL looks for “those who have an aptitude and willingness to look under the hood” and learn the programming and server side of this skilled telecom field. The “phenomenal” training and support of the NECA Boston network helps the team stay at the forefront of this cutting-edge field, Grennon added.
The IT infrastructure and security field heavily involves integrating systems through advancing technology, so it can be complex and fast-moving–but it creates a highly desired and lucrative skill set. “The field can only grow and expand,” added Jillian Grennon, Marketing Manager at LAN-TEL.
